Jeju / Mauritius: Literature Beyond Boundaries

It is indeed a great pleasure and privilege for me to welcome you all to this literary evening where the meeting of people, where words like feeling, understanding and sharing take on a particular meaning, which paves the way to Interculturality. It is this ability to experience the culture of another person and to be open minded, interested, and willing to learn about that person and culture that we aim at the FIP. This is a beautiful challenge for one should be able through personal feelings, thoughts, perceptions, and reactions to understand another culture and use that experience to reflect on their own life and surroundings. Interculturality is the interaction of people from different cultural backgrounds using authentic language in a way that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the cultures.

Jeju / Mauritius: Beyond Boundaries

First of alI, I would like to present the apologies and regrets of Jean-Marie Le Clézio who at the last moment could not make the trip to be among us this afternoon due to circumstances which are beyond his control. I am sure this afternoon, he is with us by thought. On behalf of the “Fondation pour l’Interculturel et la Paix”, the Jeju Culture and Art Foundation and the Musée de la photo  I am pleased to welcome you at this meeting of people through the International Photo Exhibition: Jeju-Mauritius: Beyond Boundaries.

D’une île l’autre

L’île de Jeju, au sud de la Corée, pourrait être une Maurice de l’Orient extrême. Longtemps, elle s’est appelée, sur els cartes marines, quelque part, une autre façon de dire quelque part, c’est-à-dire quasiment Erehwon, l’endroit qui n’existe pas. Au temps des persécutions des huguenots, Maurice et se dépendances portèrent le nom de l’Ile d’Eden, lieu de toutes les utopies. Comme à Maurice, à Jeju, les premiers voyageurs européens furent hollandais. Hamel y fit naufrage et connut la difficulté de s’adapter aux moeurs rudes des habitants, avant de gagner la confiance du roi de Corée et de s’échapper.
